Recentstudiesindicatethatyouth’sincreasedexposuretopoliticalcontentonsocialmediaplatforms doesnotcorrelatepositivelywithanincreasedinterestinpolitics.Thisseeminglycontradictoryhigh exposureversuslowinterestindicatesacertainlevelofapathytowardspoliticalparticipation.This articleproposesthatinorderforyouthtoexperienceastrongerengagementinparticipatorypolitics, theyneedtofeelchallengedandskilledenoughtobeabletomakeanimpact.Thisarticledrawson Csikszentmihalyi’sflowtheorypremisethatastateoftotalabsorption,or“flow,”canbeattainedin agame-likeenvironmentinwhichtheactorsarehighlyskilledandthechallengesmatchtheirskills. Theauthorproposesaframeworkthatreliesoncombiningmemes’viralproperties—theirability totransmitpoliticalcontent—andthestrengthofengagementinagame-likeenvironmenttocreate politicallyprovocativememesabletoimproveyouthparticipationinpolitics.
